Self-harm or self-injury refers to hurting yourself on purpose and is associated with various mental illnesses, trauma, or abuse.
Most often, people use it as a coping mechanism, because they don't have or haven't found other healthy coping skills, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.

Maybe you want people to know that you’re not “doing it for attention.”
Or that “doing it for attention” isn't necessarily a bad thing, because maybe it was the only way you felt you could signal you needed help.
